Combined Age 17 and Below & Age 18 and Above, Malaysian Piano Competition 2018
Malaysian pianist Geneviene Liew Sin Yee graduated from the Royal College of Music London (RCM) with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) Degree, First Class, where she studied with Andrew Zolinsky. She is currently pursuing postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Noriko Ogawa and Laura Roberts, supported by Help Musicians and a Guildhall Scholarship.
Since the age of 10, Sin Yee has actively participated in competitions and performances across Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the United States. Notable venues include the Weill Recital Hall (Carnegie Hall, New York), Menuhin Hall, Amaryllis Fleming Hall, Milton Court Concert Hall, Britten Theatre, and Plenary Hall. At 15, she earned the LTCL Performance Diploma from Trinity College London with Distinction and gave her first solo recital that same year.
Her achievements include being a finalist and Special Achievement Award recipient at the 4th Steinway Malaysian Youth Piano Competition (2018), semi-finalist at the 7th ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition (2018), and 1st Prize winner at the New York Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition (2017).
Sin Yee has participated in masterclasses with renowned pianists including Dennis Lee, Leslie Howard, Zhang Chi, Murray McLachlan, Mikhail Kazakevich, Richard Omrod, Sofya Gulyak, and Danny Driver. In July 2024, she attended the International Summer Piano Academy in Disentis, Switzerland, studying with Thomas Hecht, and previously joined the Overseas Masters Winter Piano Academy (OMWPA) at the Yehudi Menuhin School in 2016.
Beyond solo repertoire, Sin Yee enjoys collaborating with other musicians and has worked with violinists, cellists, flautists, singers, small ensembles and youth orchestras. While at the RCM, she did second study in conducting under the guidance of Peter Stark. She also performed in the RCM’s Keyboard Festival 2023 and 2024.
Outside of performing, Sin Yee served as Music Director for the Imperial College Malaysian Society (2022–2023), where she led rehearsals, arranged music for the play, and conducted the live ensemble. Her strong interest in music therapy and education has led her to several teaching placements, where she worked with deaf children and children with autism. In 2024–2025, she completed a placement with In Deep Music Therapy, supporting community music therapy sessions for children with special needs.
