Towards New Horizons

Over a decade has passed since Euroasia set sail. In our nascent years we explored our country, bringing regional rounds to the East coast and to East Malaysia. In the storms of the pandemic we looked inwards, pivoting online to continue providing a musical mission, and as the clouds parted, we now unfurl our sails or international horizons, bringing connections to Southeast Asia, the Far East, and to the United Kingdom, all while building new connections to fellow Malaysians.

Our stories aren’t just institutional — they’re personal. A decade ago, we had a young violinist from Seremban perform on our Euroasia stage, who now has completed a master’s degree in violin performance with distinction, from the Royal College of Music in the United Kingdom.

And yet, as much as things change, our mission remains the same. Where we once hosted performances of professionals under the Euroasia banner, today an even wider range of professionals share that stage with musicians of a new generation. What a thrill it is for Euroasia to also facilitate the journey of young talents to places like the UK, to connect to an international family of musicians, and build a global embrace of the music we all enjoy.

At our core is a spirit of mentoring. Over the years, thousands of comments from dozens of jury members have reached thousands of students and their teachers. The competitions have always been about advancing our craft, and not just in deciding who takes home which prizes. Within this grand adventure, masterclass prizes further bring new ideas of music-making to yet another generation, bringing refinement to aspirations, and creativity to hard work. This at times involves strategies for technique from pedagogues trained within the legacies of the world’s best players and educators. At other times it is about igniting sparks of creativity in the youngest of instrumentalists, seeing how their little fingers can bring big ideas to life. These mentoring sessions at times provide new perspectives, and at times reinforce music teachers’ weekly efforts, and in both endeavours carry Euroasia’s efforts in both education and building up a community of musicians and educators.
