Stephen Mak is a Malaysian bassoonist who began his journey at the age of 11 under the tutelage of Alexander Lenkov, and later studied with Professor Zhang Jin Min at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

Since then, he has performed with numerous ensembles, namely the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra,
Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, LEAD! Festival Orchestra, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, as well as the Orchestra of the Music Makers (SG). Among the artists he has worked with are Rebecca Tong, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Sir Stephen Hough, and Alban Gerhardt.

Besides orchestral performance, he is also the bassoonist of Synthe6, a sextet for piano and winds comprising alumni from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

In 2023, Stephen directed and produced a series of short films in conjunction with the YST Class of 2023 graduation concert, showcasing the stories of the 2023 cohort throughout their years of study.

When he is not playing the bassoon, Stephen finds other joys in cooking, photography, hiking, and a good cup of coffee.
